Professional UV Spot Printing Services: Frequently Asked Questions
Looking for reliable UV Spot printing services? From file specifications to delivery timelines, we’ve gathered the most common queries to help you navigate your printing project with ease. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, our team is just a message away.
What exactly is Spot UV printing?
Spot UV isn’t actually a type of ink, it’s a clear, glossy liquid varnish applied to specific “spots” of your printed piece rather than coating the whole page. Once applied, we pass the paper under an ultraviolet (UV) light machine which instantly bakes and hardens the liquid into a shiny, smooth, protective layer that catches the light beautifully.
What is the difference between regular Spot UV and Raised (3D) Spot UV?
Regular Spot UV lies completely flat on the paper, it gives you a beautiful, mirror-like shine but you don’t feel a big bump when you run your thumb over it. Raised or 3D Spot UV uses a much thicker polymer layer, creating a distinct, raised edge you can easily feel with your fingers, similar to custom embossing.
Why do you require a matte background for Spot UV to work?
Because contrast is the whole point of this effect. If we put clear gloss onto a shiny, high-gloss paper, the gloss blends right in and vanishes. By applying the shiny Spot UV over a deep, velvety matte or soft-touch background, the glossy areas pop dramatically under ambient room lighting.
How do I need to prepare my artwork files for Spot UV?
You will need to send us two files: your standard CMYK file containing the core design, and a second, identical “mask” file. In this mask file, everything you want to be shiny should be filled in with 100% solid black vector shapes, and everything else left completely blank. This tells our machine exactly where to drop the clear gloss.
Can I apply Spot UV to very small text or thin lines?
While our machines are incredibly accurate, we generally recommend avoiding ultra-thin lines or tiny font sizes (below 8pt) for Spot UV. Because it is a liquid coating, lines that are too microscopic can occasionally bleed together or lose their crisp definitions. Thick fonts, shapes, and solid logos work beautifully.
Does the gloss scratch or peel off easily?
Not at all. Because the coating is instantly bonded and cured under high-intensity ultraviolet light, it becomes an incredibly tough, durable layer. It won’t peel off at the edges, and it actually adds an extra layer of scratch and scuff protection to your printed material.
Can you do Spot UV on both sides of a business card?
Yes, we can apply it to both the front and back of your cards. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to provide separate UV mask files for both sides so our operators can align the press perfectly for each pass.
What is the minimum paper weight required for this process?
We highly recommend using a heavy cardstock, preferably 300 GSM or higher. Thinner papers can occasionally buckle or warp under the weight and heat of the UV curing process. Heavy, rigid paper keeps the final product flat, smooth, and highly professional.
